Hid lights

Things are really heating up this week at Temple Beth El, with hundreds of solar panels being installed on the building's roof. 

The installation is part of the synagogue's three-phase effort to go solar and reduce operating costs while promoting environmental stewardship through the use of sustainable energy. 

"It will be one of the largest solar installations on a house of worship in the state," said Stan Friedman, a member of the synagogue's board. 

The project is a point of pride for the congregation, whose leaders say it emphasizes the Jewish concept of Tikkun Olam, which means "repair the world" and urges people to fix what's broken in society. 

"Our goal is to be a model congregation, aiming high to make a difference in repairing the world," Rabbi Joshua Hammerman said. "For those in our area who are unaffiliated, as well as our own membership, this project is more evidence that their values are our values.The LED street light project accounts for one-third of the targeted 20% carbon footprint reduction for the City." 

A sign at the entrance to the synagogue urges members to visit a website about the project. When work got underway last week, more than 200 congregants and guests attended a solar panel-lifting ceremony. The synagogue expects the project to be finished by Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, on Sept. 4. 

Beth El Executive Director Steven Lander said the whole thing got started when a member of the synagogue, Elliot Isban, suggested they have an energy audit done by the Connecticut Light & Power Co.You benefit from buying HID Back-Up Light Kit ex-factory and directly from a LED manufacturer. to find areas where they could conserve energy and save money. The utility assesses things such as the building's insulation, heating and air conditioning and recommends improvements that can be made to reduce the energy it takes to operate the building's facilities.

They replaced 300-watt lights in the parking lot with mercury bulbs and installed high-efficiency motors and variable frequency drives to run the electromechanical equipment. 

In phase two, the synagogue replaced the 40-year-old building's roof with a high-performance, cool roof. 

In the midst of this, Isban asked if Beth El would be interested in putting solar panels on the roof to power the building. Isban is the CEO of American Solar & Alternative Power. 

"With the energy upgrade and motor upgrade, it was estimated we would save 50 percent of our bill," Lander said. 

The synagogue received funding for the project from CL&P and Altus Power Management, through grants from the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund and the Zero Emission Renewable Energy Credit Program. The efficiency fund supports programs that provide financial incentives to organizations which want to reduce the amount of energy they use, while the zero emission credit program promotes the installation of renewable energy devices. 

Lander said the synagogue was lucky to get the grants. Out of 300 grant applications in the state for these funds, only 87 were accepted. According to board member Friedman, the benefits are that they supply their own needs, they buy electricity at a discounted rate and excess energy can be sold back to the grid and go toward their bill. 

"And that is without putting up any money for the installation," he added.
