Power produced from the system is first used in the home with any excess power sent back to the grid for credit under Nova Scotia Power’s enhanced net metering agreement. The credit is applied during the winter months when there is less sun available, and that reduces or eliminates the home’s operating costs on a year-round basis. 

While still not as popular as traditional energy sources, the solar photovoltaic system is starting to grow in popularity, with several other Sydney and area homes also taking the plunge into the world of sun-produced power. 

With more people using this form of energy, the once-prohibitive costs are starting to drop, says Brian Rose, the owner of a company devoted to solar power, Appleseed Energy, based on Janvrin’s Island off Isle Madame. 

“It’s an electric panel that used to be pretty cost-prohibitive maybe five to 10 years ago but they dropped about 80 per cent in price in the last five years, so it’s really changed everything,” Rose said Thursday (July 18) while installing another system in Monastery.

In the first 75 days, the Sydney system generated almost 4,000 kWh with their 85-panel system. Even during wet weather — such as the week of June 24 — it still generated 361 kWh. 

According to Rose, on a good week, it could easily generate over 1,000 kWh. The products are maintenance-free, last a long time (a typical system has a life expectancy of 30 to 50 years) and have web-based monitoring that sends out alerts if there are issues, he said. 

Rose became involved with solar power when he installed panels on his off-grid home 13 years ago. 

And as people look for more ways to save on their energy bills, Rose believes more will become interested in the advantages of the solar photovoltaic system and how it will eventually allow them to save money. 

“Our best salesman is Nova Scotia Power because they raise the rates and anything an individual can do to shield themselves from that helps.” 

Chris Milburn has also had 15 solar photovoltaic system panels installed on the roof of his Sydney home.

There are currently no subsidies for solar photovoltaic systems in Nova Scotia, something that Richard Vinson, chair of Solar Nova Scotia, hopes will soon change.LED solar lights for project list and power.
