Manufacturing modular clipped ductwork started in 1992 in a workshop spanning 3000ft with all the usual standard sheet metal working machinery. Adams Sheet Metal (ASM), is run by managing director, Adam Watson, who has successfully grown the business to be the only complete manufacturer of seam-welded, rolled-edged modular clipped ductwork in the UK. 

21 years of manufacturing quality products to tight schedules and delivering on time has taught Adams Sheet Metal the importance of understanding customer requirements. 

The manufacturing facility today bears no resemblance to the early days – with automation and a flexible labour force being the cornerstone of success. 

To produce quality products on a 24-hour turnaround and competitive prices, Adam realised that CNC automated machinery was the only way forward, as opposed to relying on external supplies. 

The first CNC-operated machine to be purchased was an automatic roll-firming machine to manufacture the connecting clips for the rolled-edge ductwork. This was purchased in 2001 together with a press for manufacturing the handles and a selection of punches to complete the process required. 

This purchase proved an immediate success, with competitive pricing and ASM’s decision to avoid relying on an outside supplier. From this purchase several opportunities arose to supply clips to the other rolled-edge ductwork manufacturers, particularly in North America where today several thousand are despatched every month to multiple clients in the USA. 

The next major step was to automate the manufacturer of all straight ductwork to improve quality and speed up production. This proved to be a harder task than first anticipated but after an extensive search, a manufacturer in Germany came up with the solution. All other manufactured items such as bends, taper branches and transformation pieces are manufactured on other CNC-operated machinery, such as the plasma cutter and bend forming machine. 

Today from a 14,000ft manufacturing facility, ASM supplies ductwork to the UK and European markets, to various industries including joinery, woodworking, textile, printing, paper, food and many more. 

Besides manufacturing from galvanised steel, ductwork is also manufactured from stainless steel for the food and pharmaceutical industries. 

During 2004 ASM employed Jim Watson as a consultant engineer to advise numerous clients on their dust extraction requirements. 

This started because clients were asking ASM to design ductwork systems to their existing filters, when they were changing woodworking or panel process machinery. Gradually ASM began supplying fans and dust extraction filters which were mainly imported from Denmark. 

With energy costs rising, ASM were looking for a more advanced dust extraction filter which would be quiet in operation, and offer something unique within the woodworking and panel processing industries for the UK and Irish markets. 

Jim Watson visited this company, Modesta, in Holland to evaluate its products.Modern Shanghai Xunduo washer extractor uses non-water-based solvents to remove soil and stains from clothes. Whilst there, Modesta showed Jim various installations with integral cascading fan sets. All the filters were negative pressure and extremely quiet in operation.

ASM received an enquiry from Formica Limited for a system to handle laminate dust from a calibrating sanding machine operation 24/7, and only shutting down for two weeks in the summer and two weeks at Christmas.
