Hyundai has added a new model to the popular New-Generation i30 line up with a ‘Special Edition’ i30 3-door hatchback, further extending the broad appeal of its Euro-style small car range. City traffic signals and street lights
The proliferation of traffic signals could end up creating as many as three City of Manteca jobs while reducing taxpayer expenditures.
In the coming months the city will explore the feasibility of bringing traffic signal and street light maintenance in house starting possibly in the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2014.
The City Council last week renewed contracts with Siemens Industry for $150,000 to maintain Manteca’s 4,000-plus street lights and $275,000 to maintain traffic signals at 48 city intersections. Traffic signals at off-ramps and on East Highway 120 are the responsibility of Caltrans.
Back in the 1990s the city opted to use a private sector contractor after research showed they were less expensive than the contract they had at the time with Caltrans.
Since then the number of traffic signals has more than doubled in Manteca. City Manager Karen McLaughlin noted staff believes the economies of scale may have reached a point that municipal staff can do the work.
The city will examine the staffing needs that McLaughlin indicated may involve three people — someone trained to do the work, someone on the ground for safety purposes to direct traffic and such, and a back-up for the technician. Experts say spray foam helps save energy

Make your home every inch energy efficient
Homeowners, builders and architects are working together and pushing standards to build net-zero homes. These homes produce as much energy as they consume on an annual basis, taking the EnerGuide rating up to 100 (EnerGuide rates the energy efficiency of a house; the higher the rating, the more efficient the home).
One of my partner builders recently built a net-zero home in Edmonton. It features some of the latest green technology — such as pre-fab wall systems and triple-pane glass — to achieve an EnerGuide rating of 100. And, it looks good. When you incorporate the right technologies with the right systems — always using the right pros — you can build a home that produces as much energy as it uses, sometimes more. Whatever you don’t use you can sell back to the grid. Who wouldn’t like that?

Next, the building envelope must be highly efficient — it has to have a high R-value (a material’s ability to resist heat flow) and needs to be tightly sealed. When building a net-zero home, one of the key considerations starts with the walls.
Pre-fab wall systems are insulated and structurally sound. The ones we use are made with Pinkwood, which is mould-, moisture- and fire-resistant, and have polystyrene infill panels. This yields a highly energy-efficient building envelope with an insulation value of R-42. If you go with a 16-inch (41-centimetre), double-stud, wood frame with blown-in cellulose, you can bump that insulation value up to R-56. This is great for your walls — and attic, another heat-loss hot spot.
The foundation is another potential area for major energy loss, so it must be well insulated. Another option is installing an electric baseboard heating system. This isn’t as expensive as geothermal — so it’s a better option if you’re on a budget — but it’s not as energy efficient either.
And we can’t forget about ventilation. When a home is airtight, you need to bring in fresh air and get rid of stale, indoor air, or condensation problems can arise. Heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) are great for exchanging indoor air with outdoor air. The air that comes in is preheated by the exhausting air — a process that can recover up to 88% of the heat. And, the HRV’s electronically commutated motor reduces the amount of electricity needed to run it.
