In Buffalo, a $250 million pharmaceutical research facility is being built. Last month,How does a solar charger work and where would you use a solar charger? a $100 million solar-energy research and manufacturing center was announced in Rochester.

And in June, construction started on a $500 million computer chip commercialization center in Utica.

All of it is the offshoot of SUNY’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany, the wildly successful research hub that has 3,000 employees and $17 billion in public and private investment.

He said Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plans to create tax-free zones near college campuses, called Start-Up NY, will put the effort on a new trajectory.

“I predict that the governor is going to be making some very exciting announcements in terms of companies coming to New York and going into upstate areas, from Buffalo, to Rochester, to Syracuse, to Utica, that nobody thought would consider locating in New York,” said Kaloyeros, also a Cuomo adviser. “And it’s because of Start-Up NY.”

The ambition of Cuomo and Kaloyeros come at a time when upstate New York continues to try to find its footing after decades of manufacturing decline. New York employed 43,453 fewer people in June than it did in June 2008, and the number of unemployed grew 45 percent during the period, from 497,663 to 720,917.

The job growth in nanotechnology outside of Albany has so far been in the hundreds, not thousands. But state leaders say there’s more to come as the state builds its infrastructure for the research and development of the tiny chips used for computers, medical devices and military equipment.

The nanocenter’s commercialization hub in Canandaigua, Ontario County,Shop funtional and elegant solar lights, outdoor solar lighting, solar garden lights, path lights and decorative solar lights. has 130 jobs, $200 million in investment and plans to double over the next two or three years. The solar facility in Rochester is part of the Canandaigua facility and moving into a building formerly owned by Eastman Kodak, the bankrupt Rochester giant.

The Canandaigua center was nearly out of business in 2010.

“We’ve become part of this bigger critical mass,” Paul Tolley, the center’s executive director, said, “that all of sudden gives you a different value chain of validity for companies that want to try and develop a technology.”

The optimism is similar in Buffalo and Utica.

In December, Albany Molecular Research Inc. announced it will open a pharmaceutical research facility in Buffalo in conjunction with the nanocenter’s relationship with the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. It plans to add 250 jobs.

“They are opening doors that I would not normally be able to open,” said Matt Enstice, the president of the medical campus. “There’s no way Albany Molecular would be in Buffalo, New York, right now if not for the governor and the nano center.” Rectangular shaped Led Flood Light designed to replace 150W Metal Halide.
