While Florida State University’s athletics programs draw visitors to Tallahassee by the thousands, its research programs may be even more important to the local economy.

Gary Ostrander, FSU’s vice president for research, pointed out that research programs bring in about $200 million a year, or about three times the university’s annual athletics budget.

“People tend to think athletics is big business, and it is,A solar bulb that charges up during the day and lights the night when the sun sets. and it’s great,” he said. “All we’re saying is ..We turn your dark into light courtesy of our brilliant sun, solar street light, solar power generation.. We’re world class too, and if you want to have a number, here’s our number.”

Ostrander said FSU wants that number to increase. The university is preparing to hire more nationally recognized faculty, bringing in 75 new researchers and professors over the next two years.

He said the new hires would likely emphasize fields such as physical and life sciences, where FSU researchers boast recent breakthroughs ranging from superconducting “Buckypaper” that may drive down the cost of solar fuel cells to a nasal spray that could help prevent brain damage caused by concussions.

Ostrander was joined at the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce’s annual conference in Amelia Island by Larry Lynch, a consultant who helps lead the university’s Grant Assistance Program for startup companies.

The assistance grants generate an $11 average return for every dollar investment, Lynch said, and in recent years, FSU research has helped form 38 new start-up companies.

Conference presenters also highlighted the impact of FSU athletics, which goes beyond the crowds on football weekends. Bob Braman, FSU’s cross country coach,Choose your favorite street lamp paintings from thousands of available designs. has been working with Leon County to revamp the running trails at Apalachee Regional Park, which are now wide enough to accommodate top-flight collegiate competitions.

The county has already drawn high school cross country championship meets, and is preparing to compete for higher-profile NCAA events. Braman said cross-country events are already filling thousands of hotel rooms and pumping millions of dollars into the local economy.

“The granddaddy that we’re looking forward to is the 2016 (NCAA) national championship, that we’ve bid for,” he said, and the results of the bidding are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Exports of Chinese photovoltaic (PV) cells and components fell 31 percent year on year in the first half of 2013, due to overcapacity and trade disputes, according to latest data.

Export value stood at 6.5 billion U.S. dollars in the first six months, according to data from China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME).

Exports to the European Union (EU), which contributed more than 40 percent to the total export value, tumbled 58.3 percent and those to the United States declined 48.9 percent in the first six months.

The solution to a trade dispute between China and the EU over solar panels may temporarily halt pressure on the market but the domestic industry needs to cooperate with commerce authorities to maintain good market order, said an official with the CCCME.

The chamber of commerce is mulling self-management approaches for the domestic PV industry to promote survival of the fittest and encourage exports to emerging markets, said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
